As you follow the escapades or the journey of the hero through a story, it evokes some kind of emotion in the viewers. The director's job is to make sure that the audience goes through the journey and has an emotional reaction. If somebody mistreats you, treat 'em good. That kills 'em. No one who has lived even for a fleeting moment for something other than life in its conventional sense and has experienced the exaltation that this feeling produces can then renounce his new freedom so easily. I don't feel a lack of hope. It's just disappointment that after all these years we're still fighting meaningless wars for a handful of people.
