ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ What girls do to each other is beyond description. No chinese torture comes close. In acting process, it's very difficult to explain. It's something very intimate, very private. I've worked with a lot of real heavy hitters, and Quentin is maybe heads and shoulders, at least a forehead, above just about anybody I've ever worked with. Philosophy: Impersonal anxiety; refuge among anemic ideas. I was very sad to hear of the death of Ronnie Barker, who was such a warm, friendly and encouraging presence to have when I started in television. He was also a great comic actor to learn from. The idea that seeing life means going from place to place and doing a great variety of obvious things is an illusion natural to dull minds. We are never like angels till our passion dies. Now so many really good groups who have had a first major hit can't get a deal for a second one. If he wants to blow his head off, let him. I don't give a damn about Jim Bakker. Democracy makes us articulate our views, defend them, and refine them. I can't walk down the street with my head up. I'm not a hat wearer, but now I'm a hat wearer. The attempt to devote oneself to literature alone is a most deceptive thing, and often, paradoxically, it is literature that suffers for it. What could begin to deny self, if there were not something in man different from self? Life is ours to be spent, not to be saved. Sometimes string figures were used to illustrate stories, as in the case of an Eskimo example that depicts a man catching a salmon. Sometimes they had magic or religious significance. Just as the water of a river near its mouth, in its final form, is composed largely of many tributaries, so an idea, in its final form, is composed largely of later additions. It was like a classic thing with Emma. So I walked in and I slammed the door and everything fell off the wall on the set. It was my second or third scene and I was so embarrassed and scared and so nervous about what everyone would say, but everyone just packed up laughing. Acting is a masochistic form of exhibitionism. It is not quite the occupation of an adult. It was just an accident; I was never going to come out here. I've spent my whole life being told I have a face like a horse. You are just what you are, aren't you? I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me! I don't even like old cars. I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human, for God's sake. A definition of poetry can only determine what poetry should be and not what poetry actually was and is; otherwise the most concise formula would be: Poetry is that which at some time and some place was thus named. O, had I but followed the arts! Of course it looks bad when you're not executing. When things go bad, it's not going to look good. A great man is the man who does something for the first time. I mean, women are very important to me. I don't know, they just drive me crazy. People in France are very intrusive when they recognize you. In New York, they are very polite, with quick words, so it's great. Vice stirs up war, virtue fights. I have a little name. That's why people can remember it. I don't think I have been loved by my troops, but I think I have been respected. |
Zeal without knowledge is fire without light.

Beverly ClearyChildren should learn that reading is pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school. Children want to do what grownups do. I don't necessarily start with the beginning of the book. I just start with the part of the story that's most vivid in my imagination and work forward and backward from there. I don't think children's inner feelings have changed. They still want a mother and father in the very same house; they want places to play. I enjoy writing for third and fourth graders most of all. I feel sometimes that in children's books there are more and more grim problems, but I don't know that I want to burden third- and fourth-graders with them. I grew up before there were strict leash laws. I had a very wise mother. She always kept books that were my grade level in our house. I read my books aloud before they were published. I wanted to be a ballerina. I changed my mind. |
