ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ If I can procure three hundred good substantial names of persons, or bodies, or institutions, I cannot fail to do well for my family, although I must abandon my life to its success, and undergo many sad perplexities and perhaps never see again my own beloved America. We've been in the same house since 1960, so we've been here for 45 years now. We could spend time together during the day and just kind of talk and enjoy each other and enjoy the moment. But it was interesting we both knew that once you walk through the gates of that stadium, then it was on, the game was on. The Olympic Games must not be an end in itself, they must be a means of creating a vast programme of physical education and sports competitions for all young people. When you listen to Christian radio stations - and there are thousands of them now in the United States - and when you listen to Christian television networks - and there are thousands of Christian television shows across the country - they are all politically right. I'm always going to be someone that people enjoy watching. I wore goofy hats to school and did musical theater. Most people thought I was a dork. But if you have a sense of humor about it, no one can bring you down. Let us turn elsewhere, to the wasps and bees, who unquestionably come first in the laying up of a heritage for their offspring. But I just wonder what it would be like to be able to go places without people recognizing me. Suppose you could gain everything in the whole world, and lost your soul. Was it worth it? In America, with all of its evils and faults, you can still reach through the forest and see the sun. But we don't know yet whether that sun is rising or setting for our country. We have no faith in ourselves. I have never met a woman who, deep down in her core, really believes she has great legs. And if she suspects that she might have great legs, then she's convinced that she has a shrill voice and no neck. In a way, yes, because I was starting something fresh, and it was something totally independent. I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out. The highest reward that God gives us for good work is the ability to do better work. Last year, I co-sponsored the Highlands Conservation Act and in a bipartisan effort we passed the bill through Congress. The Haight is just a place; the '60s was a spirit. Up there with my awards, I have a great big statue of Groucho Marx, just to put everything in perspective. You should not believe your conscience and your feelings more than the word which the Lord who receives sinners preaches to you. I was lucky enough to get to perform on stage in front of 20 million people on TV, and 150 thousand in concerts. For 15 minutes I got to be a rock star, the 15 minutes is great! It turns into Spinal Tap after 20 minutes. I have impeached myself by resigning. Never write on a subject until you have read yourself full of it. England is better only because I stand out there as 'unusual'. We pay for the navy, and we have no commerce for the navy to protect; we pay for the army, and we loathe and execrate the work upon which it has been engaged. Kindness in ourselves is the honey that blunts the sting of unkindness in another. If a prospective Presidential approach can't be explained clearly enough to be understood well, it probably hasn't been thought through well enough. If not well understood by the American people, it probably won't "sail" anyway. Send it back for further thought. Scientists and creationists are always at odds, of course. Here, also, has been evolved the form of government consistent with the largest possible civil liberty. A lot of what used to be known as gay culture - broadly speaking, homoeroticism and being camp - has been brought into mainstream culture. I think we should be moving to an era where it's just sex. We are not primarily put on this earth to see through one another, but to see one another through. You know, when I was a young boy I used to play baseball in my back yard or in the street with my brothers or the neighborhood kids. We used broken bats and plastic golf balls and played for hours and hours. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.

Burton RichterI was born on 22 March 1931 in New York, the elder child of Abraham and Fanny Richter. In 1948 I entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, undecided between studies of chemistry and physics, but my first year convinced me that physics was more interesting to me. Modern science is fast-moving, and no laboratory can exist for long with a program based on old facilities. Innovation and renewal are required to keep a laboratory on the frontiers of science. Since stepping down as laboratory director in 1999, I have devoted an increasing fraction of my time to international issues. I am involved with energy, environment, and sustainability issues, particularly as they involve new energy sources free of greenhouse gases. While a lab Director can get done the things that he regards as important, he has the more important job of bringing out the best ideas of the broader scientific community. |
Burton Richter is a Nobel Prize-winning American physicist. He led the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center team which co-discovered the J/ψ meson in 1974, alongside the Brookhaven National Laboratory team lead by Samuel Ting. This discovery was part of the so-called November Revolution of particle physics. He was the SLAC director from 1984 to 1999. ...read more. |
