I wanted to write a happy song. I didn't know how. Let who will boast their courage in the field, I find but little safety from my shield, Nature's, not honour's law we must obey: This made me cast my useless shield away. As a head-hunter I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing my candidates do well and therefore my clients happy. I want to work with clients more as a partner than simply a head-hunter. There is far too much law for those who can afford it and far too little for those who cannot. Gulf Lesson One is the value of airpower. Any startling piece of work has a subversive element in it, a delicious element often. Subversion is only disagreeable when it manifests in political or social activity. I disagree with people who think you learn more from getting beat up than you do from winning. Trying to write books with a subject matter or in a genre or style you're not familiar with is the best way to find the Big Block looming. It was a small provincial place with great people and I had a happy childhood growing up in Queens. Competition is the keen cutting edge of business, always shaving away at costs. A public expectation, it has to be said, not of poetry as such but of political positions variously approvable by mutually disapproving groups. Having once decided to achieve a certain task, achieve it at all costs of tedium and distaste. The gain in self confidence of having accomplished a tiresome labor is immense. Do you remember a scene with Ryan and Ali playing in the snow? Well, that was improvised. Yet, taught by time, my heart has learned to glow for other's good, and melt at other's woe.
