When you do find humor in trying times, one of the first and most important changes you experience is that you see your perplexing problems in a new way - you suddenly have a new perspective on them. Drugs are merely the most obvious form of addiction in our society. Drug addiction is one of the things that undermines traditional values. Many a man in love with a dimple makes the mistake of marrying the whole girl. Bigotry or prejudice in any form is more than a problem; it is a deep-seated evil within our society. I know firsthand how agonizing waiting can be. The army is always the same. The sun and the moon change. The army knows no seasons. The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more. If you ask me to compromise on principle, I will get out the veto pen. Maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves. However, ironically, I was baptized Presbyterian, and went to a Quaker school for twelve years. Sometimes when things you love get really commercial, you end up feeling betrayed by it. I got addicted. News, particularly daily news, is more addictive than crack cocaine, more addictive than heroin, more addictive than cigarettes. Well tended garden is better than a neglected wood lot. Dreams have always expanded our understanding of reality by challenging our boundaries of the real, of the possible. This country, and the West Coast, especially, is bad at preserving any cultural legacy. My parents were music lovers and collectors. It was around. I am against intervention by a foreign power against us. But ultimately what I was impressed by during my years in government was how much the intellectual climate and the prevailing intellectual notions constrained and represented the universe within which the discourse took place. I am aware of changes gradually taking place in my own designs as part of my thinking on this matter. A little more moderation would be good. Of course, my life hasn't exactly been one of moderation. I don't know which is more discouraging, literature or chickens. I'm just going to have to grow old, because I'm too terrified to have anything done. A pitcher will never be a big winner until he hates hitters.
