Non-proliferation will only work if all states are willing to cooperate, and that will only happen if all feel they are being treated fairly. So fantasy was fine early on, and when I discovered science fiction, I was very happy with it, because my first interest in science fiction came with an interest in astronomy. Our duty, as men and women, is to proceed as if limits to our ability did not exist. We are collaborators in creation. The church which ceases to be evangelistic will soon cease to be evangelical. When I left prison, I had to figure out how to embrace my past. Getting close to books, and spending time by myself, I was obliged to think about things I would never have thought about if I was busy romping around with a brother and sister. Meditation is such a more substantial reality than what we normally take to be reality. The kitchen may not get cleaned, and I have to accept that. I do the important things. Americans should be free to recognize our religious heritage; doing that is not the same as creating a government-sponsored religion. We lived a very quiet life. We'd never go out. We once went to that sex orgy, and I didn't like it, and that was that. And there were maybe one or two cocktail parties. When you do find humor in trying times, one of the first and most important changes you experience is that you see your perplexing problems in a new way - you suddenly have a new perspective on them. Drugs are merely the most obvious form of addiction in our society. Drug addiction is one of the things that undermines traditional values. Many a man in love with a dimple makes the mistake of marrying the whole girl. Bigotry or prejudice in any form is more than a problem; it is a deep-seated evil within our society. I know firsthand how agonizing waiting can be. The army is always the same. The sun and the moon change. The army knows no seasons. The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more. If you ask me to compromise on principle, I will get out the veto pen. Maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves. However, ironically, I was baptized Presbyterian, and went to a Quaker school for twelve years. Sometimes when things you love get really commercial, you end up feeling betrayed by it. I got addicted. News, particularly daily news, is more addictive than crack cocaine, more addictive than heroin, more addictive than cigarettes. Well tended garden is better than a neglected wood lot. Dreams have always expanded our understanding of reality by challenging our boundaries of the real, of the possible. This country, and the West Coast, especially, is bad at preserving any cultural legacy. My parents were music lovers and collectors. It was around. I am against intervention by a foreign power against us. But ultimately what I was impressed by during my years in government was how much the intellectual climate and the prevailing intellectual notions constrained and represented the universe within which the discourse took place. I am aware of changes gradually taking place in my own designs as part of my thinking on this matter. A little more moderation would be good. Of course, my life hasn't exactly been one of moderation. I don't know which is more discouraging, literature or chickens. I'm just going to have to grow old, because I'm too terrified to have anything done. A pitcher will never be a big winner until he hates hitters.
