ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Many have changed so much that they have lost the magic of the dream that carried them on their own bootstraps. The more specific you are, the more general it'll be. As a reporter, I approach every situation knowing that everyone has his or her own agenda. It's not a bad thing; it's just a fact. To think straight, it is advisable to expect all qualities and attributes, adjectives, and so on to refer to at least two sets of interactions in time. My whole life I've had the fear that I was going to be abandoned. Great masters neither want nor need your worship. Your greatest gift to them and yourself is to emulate their divinity by claiming it as your own. I think your alcohol intake has to change. You know, usually a big person feels they can drink anything they want to and as much as they want to and I've cut that way back. How ironic, to be my last game that I ever played would be against Dan in a Super Bowl. The thing I always was afraid of was playing in a Super Bowl when it was raining. I can't throw a wet ball. Questioning the nature and implications of liminal instances necessarily involves failure, if only in the specifically technical sense of entering spaces where prevailing criteria of success scarcely apply. What's really sad is that a lot of very talented people are being forced to do things that are very embarrassing and I don't intend to be one of them. Character develops itself in the stream of life. Fantasies are more than substitutes for unpleasant reality; they are also dress rehearsals, plans. All acts performed in the world begin in the imagination. One has to grow up with good talk in order to form the habit of it. Although I was not aware of it at the time, the experience of growing up during the Great Depression was to have a profound impact on my intellectual and professional career. I fell in love with jazz when I was 12 years old from listening to Duke Ellington and hearing a lot of jazz in New York on the radio. I listen to all kinds of music - new music, old music, music of my colleagues, everything. The two elements the traveler first captures in the big city are extra human architecture and furious rhythm. Geometry and anguish. Florida will be gone altogether, the whole damned place, in not too long. With four people you can create one very strong kind of energy, but if you can get 65 people working together, and swinging together, that's a whole other kind of energy. I think attacks on civilians in fact boost morale. Genius creates, and taste preserves. Taste is the good sense of genius; without taste, genius is only sublime folly. I don't think it's about entertainment. I think it's about being ourselves. From the equality of rights springs identity of our highest interests; you cannot subvert your neighbor's rights without striking a dangerous blow at your own. Whenever the speech is corrupted so is the mind. Parliament must not be told a direct untruth, but it's quite possible to allow them to mislead themselves. Although nature commences with reason and ends in experience it is necessary for us to do the opposite, that is to commence with experience and from this to proceed to investigate the reason. Fate will find a way. I know I was writing stories when I was five. I don't know what I did before that. Just loafed I suppose. I read the book of Job last night, I don't think God comes out well in it. I confess that in 1901 I said to my brother Orville that man would not fly for fifty years. The distinguishing characteristics of mind are of a subjective sort; we know them only from the contents of our own consciousness. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.
