ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Ah, bless you, Sister, may all your sons be bishops. It doesn't make sense for me to be a lawyer in a place where there is no law. Organisation can never be a substitute for initiative and for judgement. The stores and the things like that, the business side of things came out at the point when, I'd say probably in the early '70s, it looked like the year of the singer-songwriter was over, 'cause music changed in our time and the spotlight was out. Coffee on an airplane always smells bad. Whenever it is served, suddenly the whole cabin stinks of it. The human condition today is better than it's ever been, and technology is one of the reasons for that. Communism is a hateful thing, and a menace to peace and organized government. We decided that the French could never write user-friendly software because they're so rude. Three times during the show the drums are lifted over the audience - I go up and out, right, left and back. Hence the same instant which killed the animals froze the country where they lived. This event was sudden, instantaneous, without any gradual development. If it was just me and Elvis one on one, which only happened once or twice in the times that I did see him, it was a really comfortable. He was a cool guy. Easy laugh, nice guy. Well, it seems to me Lincoln, I suppose, is kind of a model of a particular sort of presidency, a presidency that first of all is elected by a minority of the votes. Over and over again-in the movie, I have nine different people who have worked for Fox News network who have come forward and talked on camera, three of them anonymously, by the way. Strive to be authentic all the time. That's sort of my philosophy on life, which applies to acting. I also know what looks good before the camera, how to move the camera, and how to get a story on the screen. The world owes all its onward impulses to men ill at ease. The happy man inevitably confines himself within ancient limits. Well, you'll find the most boring part of it is the waiting, at least if it's in films anyway. Television's a lot faster, but the product... I don't think it's as good as a film. I have a lot of friends who get up most mornings and go to jobs they absolutely hate. I don't think that's what life is about and I'm so fortunate that I actually love what I do. We just kind of did our own thing and got made fun of by the popular kids. It was kind of like a badge of honor to be an outcast. So, immediately after that, I got a commission to write a piece for chamber orchestra, and in working on the material I discovered it was possible to incorporate the Buddhist teachings into the music, so that's what I started to do. It's not how much you do, it's how often you do it. It simply doesn't matter if you make some monumental effort at any given time. You have it in your to give that extra little bit. You know that you could add that finishing touch. You know you can take that extra step. Most jazz players work out their solos, at least to the extent that they have a very specific vocabulary. I judge people on how they smell, not how they look. The best doctors and the best hospitals in America, if they cannot get the patient information they need when they need it, it can lead to morbid consequences: Higher mortality. We can do it better, more consistently, and in the end, it will cost us less because the students that we produce will be superior to those without technology experience. Few Indians only had breech cloths, most being wrapped in buffalo robes, otherwise quite naked. Those movies sure got me into a rut. There was a possibility I could have been under surveillance. Years ago I wanted to buy an apartment in New York City. I was a single female - I had gone through my divorce - I had three children, I was in show business and black. It was, like, impossible. A fiction about soft or easy deaths is part of the mythology of most diseases that are not considered shameful or demeaning. Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us. I did not come to Washington to raise the electricity rates by as much as $40 per month as this plan would do. I have to experiment with methods and I'm trying to find an authentic way of making an equivalent of the living, breathing person within the limits of a single picture. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.
- Sophocles
Edward W. HoweA good scare is worth more to a man than good advice. A theory is no more like a fact than a photograph is like a person. A thief believes everybody steals. Americans detest all lies except lies spoken in public or printed lies. If a man has money, it is usually a sign, too, that he knows how to take care of it; don't imagine his money is easy to get simply because he has plenty of it. If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers. If you don't learn to laugh at troubles, you won't have anything to laugh at when you grow old. Instead of loving your enemies - treat your friends a little better. It is hard to convince a high-school student that he will encounter a lot of problems more difficult than those of algebra and geometry. Living up to ideals is like doing everyday work with your Sunday clothes on. |
