The challenge to me as a director was for the audience to see the film as going on in a straight line, so that they did not sense all of these break-ups. I did not want a film to be a collage of all these images. She's generous to a fault - if it's her own. We are all born marked for evil. I dive as much as I can. But very often in politics we have the experience called up from my father when someone was trying to help him in the campaign: I can take care of my enemies, may the Good Lord save me from my friends. So although women can do anything that men can't do, they can also do something that men can't do, and that is mother their children. There, in the chords and melodies, is everything I want to say. The words just jolly it along. It's always been my way of expressing what for me is inexpressible by any other means. Cameras these days do so much for you automatically but I still think there's a point where you should actually know the technical side.
