The challenge to me as a director was for the audience to see the film as going on in a straight line, so that they did not sense all of these break-ups. I did not want a film to be a collage of all these images. She's generous to a fault - if it's her own. We are all born marked for evil. I dive as much as I can. But very often in politics we have the experience called up from my father when someone was trying to help him in the campaign: I can take care of my enemies, may the Good Lord save me from my friends. So although women can do anything that men can't do, they can also do something that men can't do, and that is mother their children. There, in the chords and melodies, is everything I want to say. The words just jolly it along. It's always been my way of expressing what for me is inexpressible by any other means. It is one of the paradoxes of American literature that our writers are forever looking back with love and nostalgia at lives they couldn't wait to leave. My parents are my backbone. Still are. They're the only group that will support you if you score zero or you score 40. I believe that in this world it is impossible to understand God. You just have to have a simple faith. We are all wrong so often that it amazes me that we can have any conviction at all over the direction of things to come. But we must. I was invited to photograph Hollywood. They asked me what I would like to photograph. I said, Ugly men. America is addicted to wars of distraction. I would love to do more music, definitely. That is my true passion. Dance is first and then music. Men are apt to mistake the strength of their feeling for the strength of their argument. The heated mind resents the chill touch and relentless scrutiny of logic.
