ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Well, for the reasons I mention above, although I am not sure the live shows were really so brilliant - but nobody could hear much so perhaps it did not matter! It was certainly a very exciting time for us all. In my ballets, woman is first. Men are consorts. God made men to sing the praises of women. They are not equal to men: They are better. I am most thankful to Almighty Providence for mercies received, and determined still to press the case into public notice as a token of gratitude. I will not be misquoted! The worst thing that we could do is raises taxes. It would only hurt the economy. I decided that I would be one of the biggest new names; and I actually had some little fancy business cards printed up to announce it, 'Count Basie. Beware, the Count is Here.' The audience, upon learning that the real Buffalo Bill was present, gave several cheers between the acts. Of all lies, art is the least untrue. Any sort of pretension induces mediocrity in art and life alike. Teddy Roosevelt... once said, 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.' Jimmy Carter wants to speak loudly and carry a fly swatter. I think that it's not as crazily different, my job, from anyone else's, as people let themselves believe. I think people get wrapped up in their own idea of what it is, but it's really not that. Sleep is when all the unsorted stuff comes flying out as from a dustbin upset in a high wind. I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck. When the mind withdraws into itself and dispenses with facts it makes only chaos. Great genius takes shape by contact with another great genius, but, less by assimilation than by fiction. I don't like Communism because it hands out wealth through rationing books. In reading the scriptures of truth, we often put wrong constructions upon them, and apply them improperly; and I apprehend it has often been the case in relation to this portion, particularly that part in relation to man's seeking out many inventions. I do not see how a people that can find in its conscience any excuse whatever for slowly burning to death a human being, or for tolerating such an act, can be entrusted with the salvation of a race. Experience is that marvelous thing that enable you to recognize a mistake when you make it again. I'm not a politician; I'm lucky to be a filmmaker and to be able to express myself through the films I make. The world changes in direct proportion to the number of people willing to be honest about their lives. The only differences one can and should allow in socialism are between hard working people and idlers and between honest people and dishonest people. I love L.A. for the beach and stuff, that's the reason I live here. It may be necessary to use methods other than constitutional ones. If we accept the rule of those who think they are the bosses and lords of Mexico, nothing will change for the people on the bottom. A good education is that which prepares us for our future sphere of action and makes us contented with that situation in life in which God, in his infinite mercy, has seen fit to place us, to be perfectly resigned to our lot in life, whatever it may be. You have to expect the raps when you have achieved popularity as a writer. One word frees us of all the weight and pain in life. That word is love. It is an endless and frivolous Pursuit to act by any other Rule than the Care of satisfying our own Minds in what we do. I do believe that movies are subject to a million interpretations. The man who has allowed his body to deteriorate cuts a pitiful figure - chest collapsed, stomach protruding. The United States Postal Service is the world's most efficient postal system. Manners are one of the greatest engines of influence ever given to man. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.

Elsie De WolfeIt is the personality of the mistress that the home expresses. Men are forever guests in our homes, no matter how much happiness they may find there. |
Elsie de Wolfe was an American interior decorator, nominal author of the influential 1913 book "The House in Good Taste," and a prominent figure in New York, Paris, and London society. During her married life, the press usually referred to her as Lady Mendl. ...read more. |
