ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ It seems to me that we are profoundly ignorant of ourselves. The Danish glee: the national version of cheerfulness. The decline of the aperitif may well be one of the most depressing phenomena of our time. In the mental calmness of a spiritual life, I have found that the answers to the whys in our lives are able to come to you. In my music I find the same thing. There are no small churches, just small people. I have traveled a long road from the battlefield to the peace table. Green is my favorite. And it's my favorite because it's the color of my wife's eyes, grass, trees, life, and money, and mother earth! From the stage I've seen people of all ages absolutely roaring at really good toilet humour. When the human mind exists in the light of reason and no more than reason, we may say with absolute certainty that Man and all that made him will be in that instant gone. Brass shines as fair to the ignorant as gold to the goldsmiths. People in my books tend to get their just deserts, even if not at the hands of the police. A painting is finished when the subject comes back, when what has caused the painting to be made comes back as an object. When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that is in itself a choice. Cloning represents a very clear, powerful, and immediate example in which we are in danger of turning procreation into manufacture. I'll let you in on a secret: I can't stand Jay Ward. I hate being compared to Rocky and Bullwinkle. It's just a different style of humor. One reason we resist making deliberate choices is that choice equals change and most of us, feeling the world is unpredictable enough, try to minimise the trauma of change in our personal lives. Work cures everything. Man's role is uncertain, undefined, and perhaps unnecessary. I would prefer being in a hard battle; however, I will be satisfied with whatever happens to me in this war, if only the country comes out of this peril safe and to the satisfaction of the finest and best government on earth. For athletes, the Olympics are the ultimate test of their worth. We march and fight, to death or on to victory. Our might is right, no traitors shall prevail. Our hearts are steeled against the fiery gates of hell. No shot or shell, can still our mighty song. If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us. Happiness: a good bank account, a good cook, and a good digestion. I was already on pole, then by half a second and then one second and I just kept going. Suddenly I was nearly two seconds faster than anybody else, including my team mate with the same car. Money is a strange business. People who haven't got it aim it strongly. People who have are full of troubles. Don't invade Iraq. Inspections work, war won't. Cases of sickness made up a very small percentage which in my opinion was normal. However, propaganda pamphlets dropped from aircraft were telling the workers to feign illness, and detailed instructions were given to them on how to do it. And learn that when you do make a mistake, you'll surface that mistake so you can get it corrected, rather than trying to hide it and bury it, and it becomes a much bigger mistake, and maybe a fatal mistake. An enormous part of our mature experience cannot not be expressed in words. Every day I work at not taking this fame thing seriously. Fortunately I have a great group of friends who help me do this. I suppose I'm led to do so by the fact of what happened to my contemporaries - people whom I've admired, people who I thought were ten times better than me when I was in my twenties and early thirties. I may have been right. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.
- Sophocles
Frank StellaA sculpture is just a painting cut out and stood up somewhere. Architecture can't fully represent the chaos and turmoil that are part of the human personality, but you need to put some of that turmoil into the architecture, or it isn't real. But, after all, the aim of art is to create space - space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live. I don't like a lot of the stuff that goes on in the art world, but it's hard to be old and like what goes on around you. I don't like to say I have given my life to art. I prefer to say art has given me my life. I want to make exalted art. A successful image has pictorial lift. I am looking for whatever is up there. I was worried in the '80s that the best abstract painting had become obsessed with materiality, and painterly gestures and materiality were up against the wall. No art is any good unless you can feel how it's put together. By and large it's the eye, the hand and if it's any good, you feel the body. Most of the best stuff seems to be a complete gesture, the totality of the artist's body; you can really lean on it. One learns about painting by looking at and imitating other painters. Up until 35 I had a slightly skewed world view. I honestly believed everybody in the world wanted to make abstract paintings, and people only became lawyers and doctors and brokers and things because they couldn't make abstract paintings. |
