ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ I want people to remember me as a full on entertainer and a good person. I practice every day. I've been doing it since I was eight. Knowledge and human power are synonymous. The long days are no happier than the short ones. I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to. The years between 1800 and 1825 were distinguished, so far as our domestic development was concerned, by the growth of the Western pioneer Democracy in power and self-consciousness. I've always wanted to do a Crichton book. I really love his writing. I don't really enjoy filming. I sing to the realists; people who accept it like it is. You know how you smoke out a sniper? You send a guy out in the open, and you see if he gets shot. They thought that one up at West Point. I suppose being his twin made me understand Robin that much more easily. The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply. So, without being cold, you really have to try to retain the capacity to help people without becoming too emotional or allowing your own emotions to have full rein. Words are potent weapons for all causes, good or bad. I can only point out a curious fact. Year after year the Nobel Awards bring a moment of happiness not only to the recipients, not only to colleagues and friends of the recipients, but even to strangers. In this context, the church supports and favors every effort today to seek the full development of the personality of all human beings, and to promote their fundamental rights, their dignity and liberty. I think what I'm trying to do is create moments of recognition. To try to detonate some kind of feeling or understanding of lived experience. A good many young writers make the mistake of enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope, big enough for the manuscript to come back in. This is too much of a temptation to the editor. As early as when I was five or six I wanted to perform. I challenge myself everywhere, onstage, on the golf course. Hey, isn't that the point of it all? To keep getting better? Otherwise why do it? To be a prisoner means to be defined as a member of a group for whom the rules of what can be done to you, of what is seen as abuse of you, are reduced as part of the definition of your status. I recorded that because it happened to me. I wasn't making a point. I was never given a trial. I never went before any magistrate, nor did my parents. To this day, I do not know what the charges that were lodged against me or my deceased parents at this time. Great artists have no country. The marathon can humble you. Suddenly, I became conscious of the fact that the driver was in the act of pulling up the horses in the courtyard of a vast ruined castle, from whose tall black windows came no ray of light, and whose broken battlements showed a jagged line against the sky. The great men of a nation reach out to all mankind. They are unifying, not divisive; internationally conciliating and still great nationally. I heard we'll get you a pass because we know you're married to a black woman. You're married to a sister so we'll give you that pass but also, those who know me but also if they look at the body of work, it is the bigger picture. Excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.

Garry TrudeauI don't think so, but it's always in the back of my mind that many of the soldiers being wounded and killed in Iraq are about the same age as my kids. My godson is going over soon, so the war's about to get personal for me. I try to take people one at a time, with all the contradictions and compromises that most of us live with. In any event, it's not exactly a secret to regular readers what my views on the war are. Life is like a movie-since there aren't any commercial breaks, you have to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of it. Lives have been altered in fundamental ways, and later, after they acquire a more complete understanding of what goals are actually attainable, many are left facing a lot of pain and frustration. And yet, there's no culture of complaint. Well, it's a humor strip, so my first responsibility has always been to entertain the reader... But if, in addition, I can help move readers to thought and judgment about issues that concern me, so much the better. |
