The man who has no inner-life is a slave to his surroundings. There's editing, and scripts to read and edit, and casting, and all the elements of production that just sort of take up the normal downtime that you would have as an actor. So there's not a lot of that for me. Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. I don't champion the idea of being in a Hollywood movie. I never had fun in one of them. Critics can be your most important friend. I don't read criticism of my stuff only because when it's bad, it's rough-and when it's good, it's not good enough. Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being. Almost everything that is great has been done by youth. And having a strong family, you know we've lost some members of our family and had some setbacks, but I think a good family and kids all those things I thought at one time... you got to be kidding me... Those things are so important they enable you to go on. I once asked the most fabulous couple I know, Madonna and Guy Ritchie, how they kept things fresh despite having been married for almost seven months. 'It's a job, Al,' Guy told me.
