ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ All I need is my brains, my eyes and my personality, for better or for worse. Culture is to know the best that has been said and thought in the world. If you've ever seen the film In Which We Serve, but it was about a destroyer in the Mediterranean. The 9/11 Commission recently released their report, citing important changes which need to be made to improve our nation's homeland security. I voiced my disappointment with the House leadership when this report was left until after the August recess for action. I was interested in science before I even knew what science was. A disposition to preserve, and an ability to improve, taken together, would be my standard of a statesman. It's a very good question, very direct, and I'm not going to answer it. Work with some men is as besetting a sin as idleness. When I see the Ten Most Wanted Lists... I always have this thought: If we'd made them feel wanted earlier, they wouldn't be wanted now. And I kind of said to myself if I get my voice back I'm not going to take back the old anxiety about it and just focus on the limitations. I'm really going to enjoy it. To have frequent recourse to narrative betrays great want of imagination. If you want to go into space first time on a new vehicle that's never been flown, you want to go with a pro. There is no French town in which the wounds inflicted on the battle-field are not bleeding. Not what we experience, but how we perceive what we experience, determines our fate. One of the things I had a hard time getting used to when I came to California in '78 was Santa Claus in shorts. If I die a violent death, as some fear and a few are plotting, I know that the violence will be in the thought and the action of the assassins, not in my dying. An 'unemployed' existence is a worse negation of life than death itself. I suddenly saw that all the time it was not I who had been seeking God, but God who had been seeking me. I had made myself the centre of my own existence and had my back turned to God. I just hate to be in one corner. I hate to be put as only a guitar player, or either only as a songwriter, or only as a tap dancer. I like to move around. Children should enjoy the few years they have just being a kid. I'm an artist and I can draw very well. I'm amazed that everybody can't draw well because I can do it so effortlessly. The inability to listen and to depict in the countenance what others have said has spoiled many a good actress. I had, of course, no model for that sort of woman being married, but I can make that up as I go along. The reason progress is slow is that we always expect other men to be the heroes and to live the heroic lives. But we all have hero stuff in us. In our sphere of life we can always live more heroically and triumphantly and grow in heroic stature. Your performance gets you promoted. It doesn't matter if you're brown, back or white. When I was younger, my whole sense of self-worth was based on whether or not I was working, which was awful. And I had a baby at 20 years old, so it wasn't just about me. At around the age of 30 there was a stretch where I wasn't working - certainly not on anything I liked, anyway - and I started to do other things. Valor is of no service, chance rules all, and the bravest often fall by the hands of cowards. Being a decathlete is like having ten girlfriends. You have to love them all, and you can't afford losing one. I am ready to accept all accusations, allegations, anger - but I have to succeed. I'm in trouble because I'm normal and slightly arrogant. A lot of people don't like themselves and I happen to be totally in love with myself. The ancient Romans built their greatest masterpieces of architecture, their amphitheaters, for wild beasts to fight in. In essence, String Theory describes space and time, matter and energy, gravity and light, indeed all of God's creation... as music. Good fellowship and friendship are lasting, rational and manly pleasures. |
Rather fail with honor than succeed by fraud.
- Sophocles
Maeve BinchyI was very pleased, obviously, to have outsold such great writers. But I'm not insane - I do realize that I am a popular writer who people buy to take on vacation. I'm an escapist kind of writer. |
